CANCELLED - Weave a Beautiful Scarf in a Day

If you want to try weaving just for fun to see how you like it (and we think you will!), don't miss the Southern California Handweavers’ Guild popular “Weave a Scarf in a Day” workshop.

In this workshop, you will choose from a variety of yarns with guidance from your workshop instructor, Judy Hersh. Judy will guide you in warping a rigid heddle loom - a good loom for first-time weavers - and then guide you in efficient techniques to finish weaving your scarf by the end of the day!

We provide all yarn, looms, and equipment. If you would like to use your own rigid heddle loom, you may do so, but please let us know in advance.

You must register on Eventbrite here  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/weave-a-beautiful-scarf-in-one-day-tickets-781115356057

JUDY HERSH BIO:

I was five years old when my maternal grandmother first taught me to sew. I was recovering from the chicken pox and she wanted to keep me busy instead of scratching! I learned to hand sew 3 outfits for my Barbie, Midge and Tressy dolls that also included some embroidery. My paternal grandmother taught me to crochet, knit and macrame.

I got my first sewing machine when I was thirteen and before I knew it, I was 19 and attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, graduating with an AA Degree in Fashion Design. I worked in the Los Angeles garment industry as a patternmaker and designer, specializing in production patternmaking.

Fast forward to January 2015. I decided I wanted to learn to weave and took my first class with Deborah Jarchow; weaving on a four harness table loom. I was hooked! When Deborah started teaching classes on the rigid heddle loom, I jumped right in and have taken most of her classes.

In 2018 I was asked to teach a rigid heddle class. The next thing I knew I was developing a series of classes that now include Sewing with Handwoven Fabrics, Designing, Dorset Buttons, Kumihimo Braiding and some fun fiber art classes for kids.

I specialize in using natural fibers and am passionate about using fibers from local producers. I have always been concerned about the environmental impact the garment industry has made globally and I am adamant about recycling and repurposing fiber & clothing to avoid it going into our landfills.

I am thrilled to now have my own studio where I can share my skills with others, offer guest instructor classes and a place for people to gather and create. There is fiber, supplies and equipment to purchase. In the boutique you will find my original designs, several artisans designs and yarn & clothing from estate and garage sales to repurpose into your designs. I’m “Always Happy To Help You Be Creative”!

LOCATION: Health Education Center, Valley Presbyterian Hospital (VPH) is located at 15107 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys, CA 91405 between Sherman Way to the north and Victory Blvd. to the south; Sepulveda Blvd. to the west and Kester St. to the east. If you're using Google Maps or another GPS system, follow directions to the Valley Presbyterian Hospital Noble Street Parking Garage.

There is street parking in the surrounding neighborhood or you can use the hospital's Noble Street parking garage and we will validate. Avoid spots marked “physician.” You are most apt to find parking on the lower or basement levels. Be sure to note where you are, because the lot can be confusing. (Each floor is marked by a color but the spaces are not numbered.)

From the parking garage, take the elevator up or down to the ground level and walk across Noble St. to the Hospital campus. Continue walking past the Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) building on the left. Go a short distance further until you reach the Health Education Center on the left. Just past SCOI there is a ramp, which takes you down to the Health Education Center entrance. A little further on there are steps leading to entrance. Once inside, the auditorium is on the right.
