SCHG October 2004:
Garden Palettes

with Cameron Taylor-Brown

Saturday, October 9 2004
Location: Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Math/Science Building, Room 101 in the Physics building (Directions)
General Meeting and Program Time: 10:00 a.m.

October's program, given by Cameron Taylor-Brown, is an experience dealing with texture, color, pattern, balance, proportion. The vocabulary for a well-designed garden is strikingly similar to yarns selected for a work in fiber. Get excited by color reproductions of glorious gardens and create design ideas they inspire. We'll look at a variety of gardens including the Robert Irwin garden at the Getty Center in Los Angeles: A stunning variety of colors and textures; A sculpture in the form of a garden aspiring to be art. Rummage through huge piles of luscious fibers to interpret your own gardener's palette of yarns. By the end of the day you will have planted the seeds for many future projects.

To make the most of the program, bring: a pencil, tape, scissors, four 4" by 12" pieces of cardboard, a small basket for gathering yarns, and perhaps your own reproductions of garden images. In the Afternoon Workshop, we will explore these themes in more detail and depth. In addition to what you bring to the morning session, bring the tools of your fiber craft: knitting needles, crochet hooks, large mesh canvas and needles, or a pre-warped loom (threaded 8-10" wide in a 4 harness straight draw), in a garden color. Students can also make a cardboard tapestry loom if they don't have a portable harness loom. General program questions can be directed to the Program Committee. We hope to see you at the September meeting!
