Last January, Jeanne Walker gave a lecture on her work in Transparent Tapestry, also known as "transparency" weaving. In September she returns to teach us in more detail about the technique of this pictorial form. She will start with a lecture, and then continue with a hands-on workshop for those interested.
Visit Jeanne Walker's website.
The lecture will cover the basics of pictorial weaving, sources of inspiration and creativity, and how to choose projects that will be the most successful and show transparency to the best advantage. Loom, warp and weft yarn, and sett options will be discussed, as well as use of color, modifying color, weaving shapes and using hatching, and it will conclude with finishing techniques.
There will be an exercise in preparing and modifying a cartoon to the correct size for a project. Even if you do not plan to take the workshop, and even if you think you can't draw, please bring drawing materials and one or more photos of people or nature (your own or from magazines of books) to experiment with. Try to find pictures at least 8" by 10" so you can see details. Enlarge photos on a computer or at a copy shop. You will learn tricks that will get you to a design for a pictorial weaving.
Here you will learn the mechanics of the weaving, how to put in the inlay and blend colors, and decide which portions of the picture will be opaque versus transparent. You will get into the weaving of your project, so the more you can prepare ahead of time, the more you will accomplish. You will need to prepare a loom with a warp, and bring yarns for the weft, as well as your prepared cartoon.
More details of how the loom should be prepared and materials list are available when you register for the workshop.
The workshop price is $60 for Full Members, or $70 for Subscribers or nonmembers. To register, please send a deposit of $25 to Deanna Deeds, SCHG Program Chair, at the address in your year book. Make checks payble to SCHG. Your deposit will be cashed 1 month prior to the workshop. The balance is due on the date of the workshop.
Any questions can be directed to the Program Chair. We hope to see you at the September meeting!
