Join us this month for a visit to a small textile exhibit the Fowler Museum!
Wild Silk, Island Fibers: Rare Textiles from Madagascar
Wild Silk, Island Fibers showcases textiles from Madagascar now in Chicago’s Field Museum, collected from 192627 by Ralph Linton. These lamba shoulder cloths are in some cases also used as funeral shrouds that feature in the Malagasy famadihana, the periodic re-enshrouding of the remains of ancestors. The textiles on display are made of an unusual array of fibers, including wild silk, raffia, bark and banana plant.
Meet at the cafe (see your Tie-up for location) at 11:00 a.m. where we will hold a brief meeting, hand out the 2003 Challenge packets and get a chance to grab a bite of lunch if you like. Then meet up in front of the Fowler Museum at 12:30 to tour the textile exhibit and any others you would like to see.
Any questions can be directed to the Program Chair. We hope to see you at the June meeting!
