SCHG June 2002:
Color,
the Design Game, and...
a Guild Show Challenge

Saturday 8 June 2002, 10:00 a.m.
Location: Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Math/Science Building, Room 113 (Directions)

Come gather for the final meeting for the year, where we'll stimulate ideas for design, and spark your creativity!

We'll view the video Color Interaction for Handweavers, in which Donna Sullivan, who has a Certificate of Excellence in Handweaving, leads us through applying color principles to handwoven structures. This 38 minute video includes woven examples illustrating a wide range of color interactions in weaving, including color effects from blending to vibration. We'll be presented with color lessons built one upon the other from the basics to the complex, using woven examples for illustration. You'll learn how to use color and how it is affected by your choice of fiber and weave structure, etc. Your handwovens will be even more successful once you understand these principles.

Then we will take a step back and have some fun with a stimulating way to think about design. Led by Merna Strauch, we'll play a few rounds of "The Design Game" described in Ann Sutton's book Ideas in Weaving, in which she says, "Ideas often occur through the juxtaposing of two or more thoughts which had not come together before." This game was developed by Anne Sutton as a way to use an element of chance combinations to stimulate design. In this game you draw a number of cards with elements of weaving design such as color, fiber, structure, etc., and the challenge is to describe how you would interpret those "rules" in a weaving project. This exercise will warm up your creativity for...

... the Guild Show Challenge: you will be presented with the parameters for a project to be completed over the summer. All Guild members are invited to participate in this Challenge, whether or not you were able to attend the June meeting. Whether you weave, spin, make a basket, knit, or whatever, try out this challenge. Just as we did in the Design Game, you are to try to successfully use the parameters in a design, only this time you will actually make a project. Projects will be due at the October meeting, and will be displayed in a special exhibit at the Guild's annual show in November.

Guild Show Challenge Parameters

As usual we will not meet in July or August, but now you have a challenge to work on over the summer!
