A Variety of Handspindles

SCHG May 2005:
The Southern California Handweavers' Guild presents
Learn to Spin on a Handspindle
a Hands-On Program with Anna Zinsmeister

Saturday, May 14, 2005

Location: Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Math/Science Building, Room 101 in the Physics building (Directions)
General Meeting and Program Time: 10:00 a.m.

Handspindles have been used all over the world by many different cultures. They are still used in some parts of the world. Though spinning on a spindle seems slower than using a spinning wheel, the fact that you can carry it with you anywhere you go, makes it faster in the long run. You can just stick it in your purse or bag and spin at meetings or lectures, or in the airport.

This workshop will be taught be Anna Zinsmeister, who has been spinning since 1978. Anna will present many different spindles (high whorl, low-whorl and support spindle), as well as thigh spinning (spinning without any tools).

Handspindles made from CDs

For those who don't have a spindle, Anna will teach you how to make a CD spindle or a spindle using a wooden toy wheel. Wrist Distaff

The workshop will also cover using a wrist distaff, which can be made during the workshop, and how to ply using the Andean plying method and other plying techniques. There will be spinning wheels and a drum carder and hand carders to try.

Supply list provided for those who want to get their own supplies or make the wrist distaff. Fiber and supplies will also be available for purchase during the workshop.

General program questions can be directed to the Program Committee. We hope to see you at the May meeting!
