SCHG March 2003:
"Ready, Sett, Go! Warp Design Made Simple:
A one-day design workshop for weavers " with Cameron Taylor Brown

Saturday 12 April 2003, 10:00 a.m.
Location: Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Math/Science Building, Room 113 (Directions)

Cameron Taylor-Brown has immersed herself in the world of fibers since the 1970's. She taught design at the Philadelphia College of Textiles, worked as a gallery curator, and was a founding board member of the Textile Group of Los Angeles. Her work is widely exhibited, and has been published in Interior Design, Fiberarts, American Craft, and Fiberarts Design Books Four, Five and Six. She conducts workshops throughout California, and has taught classes at the National Needlework Association and Convergence.

Program (lecture) on Saturday morning, at 10:00: Ready, Sett, Go!

Many handweavers guess at sett by winding yarn around a ruler. There is another way to determine sett simply and accurately. For many years, the textile industry used the Ashenhurst Formula, which provides easy calculations for spun yarns that account for fiber, yarn type, weave and end use.

In the morning session (Guild Program), the secrets of the Ashenhurst Formula will be revealed. In a hands-on, practical exploration, we'll move between yarn samples and paper and pencil computations, focusing on simple calculations that are of immediate use to handweavers.

Workshop: Hands-on seminar continues

In the afternoon workshop (registered participants only), we'll apply these new skills to the design of actual cloth. Working from a variety of weave structures and selecting from piles of beautiful yarns, students will put together design ideas that integrate Ashenhurst calculations with the aesthetic concerns of color, texture, and pattern. This workshop is appropriate for weavers who can read a basic weave draft.

Seminar fee: $12 for Full SCHG Members, $14 for nonmembers and Subscribers.
Materials fee: $5 (paid to Cameron).
To register: Send your payment (in a check made to SCHG) to Deanna Deeds, Program Chair, at the address in your year book, or contact
programs@schg.org (Balance due at workshop. Deposit refundable until one month prior to workshop.)

Any questions can be directed to the Program Chair. We hope to see you at the April meeting!
