Tablet Weaving
with Linda Hendrickson
Saturday, March 5, 2005
Location: Los Angeles Valley College,
5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Math/Science Building, Room 101 in the Physics building
(Directions)
General Meeting and Program Time: 10:00 a.m.
SATURDAY: Part 1 & 2
Morning Lecture & Half-day Workshop
Part 1 (Program): Morning Lecture/Demonstration:
Traditional and Contemporary Tablet Weaving
In this lecture/demonstration, Linda shares her enthusiasm
for this 2500 year old craft and explains and demonstrates its
delighiful versatility. Tablets can be flipped and turned to
produce many different weave structures and designs; warps
can be twisted together, crossed and pulled into a tube. Her
special interest is in traditional tablet-woven motifs from Asia
and North Africa. She has studied and reproduced designs
from many of these beautiful textiles, including garment trim
with magical symbols from Indonesia, diaper bands from
Persia, and curtains found in Ethiopian churches.
Visit Linda's web site at http://www.lindahendrickson.com,
which has information on ply-split braiding as well as tablet weaving.
Part 2 (Workshop): Afternoon Workshop:
Continuous Warping and Basic Warp-Twined Designs
This is a relaxed introduction to tablet weaving for beginners, covering basic
tablet weaving techniques from Linda's book Tablet Weaving for Parents
and Children, Practice the information presented in the morning lecture by
making a continuous warp and weave striking geometric patterns in warp
twining, the most common structure in tablet weaving.
Saturday Workshop fee: $25 for Full SCHG Members, $30 for nonmembers and
Subscriber Members. There will be a supply list.
SUNDAY: Part 3
Full-day Workshop
Part 3: Tablet Weaving:
Two-Hole Andean Pebble Weave
Full-day Sunday workshop with Linda Hendrickson
Sunday - March 6, 2005
Pebble weave is traditionally woven on a backstrap loom using
pickup techniques. The Dutch weaver Marijke van Epen, author of
The Unknown Tablet Weaving and other books, analyzed the
structure of this and other Andean weaves and determined how to
weave them with tablets. Linda has traveled to Holland to study this
technique with Marijke. This class will be based on Linda's new
booklet Two-Hole Andean Pebble Weave, which includes traditional
designs as well as an alphabet and several words that are graphed
and ready to weave.
The usual corner holes are not used. Instead, holes are punched in
the sides of the tablets. For the pattern, one hole is threaded with a
light thread and one with a dark thread. The weaving is created by
following a pattern draft. For each row of the graph, tablets are
simply turned so that the color in the top of the shed matches light or
dark as indicated in the graph. It is slow but very easy to weave -
and, if mistakes are made, very easy to unweave! The band is
completely reversible with the pattern on the back in the opposite
colors.
In this class, learn to make the warp (a variation on the continuous
warp) and read the graph, and weave traditional Andean designs and
letters. If you are ambitious, you can also graph and weave
something of your own design.
Sunday Workshop fee: $50 for Full SCHG Members, $60 for nonmembers and
Subscriber Members. There will be a supply list.
