About Michael Rohde: For Michael, weaving has been a fervent activity since 1973. In 1998 Michael left behind work in biotechnology and fully devoted his time to weaving. Formal training in drawing, color and design came from the Alfred Glassel School of the Houston Museum of fine Arts. Over the years activities included letures, workshops, teaching; being a juror, show organizer and exhibitor in many local, national and international juried and invited shows. Michael's statement: "These observations come from news of world events, travels and study of ancient and traditional art forms." Learn more at www.michaelrohde.com
The wedge weave technique was occasionally used by the Navajo in the 19th century. A unique feature of this technique is that the whole warp is used, and there are no cut ends, hence no fringe or finishing! We will be using a small frame as a loom and starting out by making a small badge or face pin and moving on to a tapestry or geometric image - in normal or wedge weave.
Registered students will bring a rigid heddle loom or other small loom. There will be some yarns provided but any additional yarns brought by participants will add to the interest of your woven project. Also bring: scissors, tapestry or blunt needles, small shuttles or tapestry bobbines, tapestry or Navajo beater (an old metal kitchen table fork will work), note taking materials. Optional: a table light. The following materials will be provided and are paid for with the $25 material fee: warp/weft/header cord, warping frame, needles and handout. Contact Michael about a small portable brass loom that Michael uses.
There is a limit of 20 participans for this workshop.
For all SCHG workshops: Material fees are charged per workshop and includes yarns, handouts and mailing costs as applicable.
Workshop fee: $65 for full SCHG membes, $75 for nonmembers and subscribers.
Materials fee: $25 payable to the workshop instructor.
