SCHG January 2007:
The Southern California Handweavers' Guild presents
"Introduction To The Visual Journal" with Sharon Kagan

January 13th, 2007
Program: Saturday 9:00 am

Location: Los Angeles Valley College, 5800 Fulton Ave, Valley Glen
Room 101 in the Physics building (Directions)
General Meeting and Program Time: January 13th 9:00 a.m.

Everyone has creativity, and given a supportive environment their creativity will flourish. The Visual Journal Workshop emphasizes process, rather than product. We’ll get an intro to an approach that will let us learn to trust our artistic instincts and develop a Visual Vocabulary of our own, using a variety of techniques and materials.

We’ll only have time for a taste on Saturday, but Sharon uses techniques that include collage, drawing with the non-dominant hand, and guided visualization. The purpose is to practice risk taking and experimentation. When you know that you can turn any “mistake” into a successful work of art, you will overcome the biggest barrier to artistic expression.

This will be a hands-on experience designed to help answer your questions about creativity and self-expression. No previous art or writing experience is needed. If you have them, bring a large journal with unlined pages, oil pastels, and a few colored pens. We’ll have extra materials on hand for those who need them.

Sharon Kagan, M.F.A. and M.A., is founder and director of The Creativity Center, www.creativitycenterla.com, in Santa Monica. She has been teaching since 1981. A painter and performance artist, she is a Brody Arts Fund Fellowship Award recipient and a California Arts Council Artist-in-Residence. Sharon is currently an adjunct faculty member at Santa Monica College, where she helped develop the Art Mentor Program for gifted students.

General program questions can be directed to the Program Committee. We hope to see you at the January meeting!
