About the Southern California Handweavers' Guild |
Founded in 1946, the Southern California Handweavers' Guild (SCHG) is the guild in southern California covering the largest geographical area. With over 120 members, it is also the largest in membership (as far as we know). Many members of smaller local guilds also maintain membership in SCHG.
The motto of the guild is to "Weave today to preserve the past and create for the future."
The objectives of SCHG, as stated in the by-laws, are:
(Or, what are all these acronyms anyway?)
Most guilds in Southern California, including SCHG, pay dues to the Association of
Southern California Handweavers (ASCH). This affiliation of guilds
is the organization through which the guilds host the Conference of the
Association of Southern California Handweavers
(CASCH), a biennial
conference held on odd years.
Meeting Dates and Location
Regular meetings of SCHG are held on the second Saturday of each month, from September to June (inclusive), with some exceptions. For a current calendar of upcoming meetings and programs, please see our programs page.
Our meetings are at Los Angeles Valley College
To get driving directions from your location, click the
YahooMaps button, click "Driving Directions: To this location" and enter your point of departure:
Enter the campus at the light at Fulton and Hatteras, then make an immediate right. Drive to the bend in College Road and park. The Physics building is on the left of the drive. Check the side door if the front one is locked.
Our Guild meeting day is usually centered around a general business meeting around lunch time, where we brown bag a lunch and then have our meeting. Around this central meeting will occur either a morning main Program/Lecture on a weaving or spinning or other fiber arts related topic, and an afternoon workshop or spin-in social, or we'll have our workshop in the morning and main Program/Lecture in the afternoon. The program is free to all, and any workshop is usually limited in size and requires registration.
Visitors are welcome at our meetings. We love meeting new fiber people! Whether you are an experienced weaver or spinner, or brand new to the craft, you are welcome to attend our program. Please introduce yourself!
Check your Tie-up newsletter or the programs page for definite
times and location of each meeting and program activity.
New and long-time members alike, you are needed in these vital positions.
Take part and make the most of your guild; help shape who we are, where
we are going and how we operate. Contact any board member to
discuss where you would like to serve.
SCHG owns quite an extensive library containing an estimated 1000 or more
books, magazines, bulletins, etc. - all about weaving and related fiber arts,
including some fascinating old items that could be historically interesting or
informative.
It is a benefit of membership in SCHG to be able to borrow from this
collection. Unfortunately, since moving from our previous home,
it is currently in storage and
unavailable.
Anyone with ideas or the inclination to start a project or committee
to get the library housed somewhere accessible, please contact a
board
member or the
webpage maintainer.
The Tie-Up newsletter goes out to over 200 weavers and fiber enthusiasts ten times a year. There is a limited amount of space for ads which are free for SCHG members and $5 for non-members. Ads are subject to availability and editing. Good copy and a check made out to SCHG must received by the 18th of the month for inclusion in the next issue. Check with the Tie-Up Editor for availability and other details.
